LUDHIANA: Rakesh Bhonsle is another regular peon, working in the courier department at CMC hospital.

He walks away briskly carrying dispatches, and everything seems normal. Except that he breaks down when asked about his salary.

Bhonsle alleges that he has not received any salary for last 10 years.
And yet he works.

On a stormy rainy day in August 1994, with his wife and three little children, Bhonsle had to leave their room in Khud Mohalla, where the roof had begun to leak. They had approached the then supervisor, Aishley G Issiah, who had handed over the keys for a single room quarter to the family in Dai Hata on Downing Street in the backyards of CMC Hospital.

Bhonsle admitted while the arrangement was meant to be temporary, he presumed that he be allowed to retain the house since he has served the hospital for last 17 years.

All the same, the authorities began to draw back the complete month''s pay from his salary cheque two months later, and have been doing so since October 1994.

He is given a salary slip, where his pay is enlisted as deducted for repairs of the house he lives in, while there have never been any repairs, he alleged.

For the past decade, Bhonsle reports to his job every morning, and works for the six-hour shift vigorously. He said he had knocked at everyone’s door, including the Medical Superintendent, the Director, the Church, and the Union, but to no respite.

Deputy Medical Superintendent Dr Rajeev Kapoor said that there was no account of Bhonsle''s seeking permission to live in the house.

Instead, he has grabbed the house and has refused to vacate it. Thus as per the rules of the college, he is being fined Rs 150 per day for the offence, which was deducted from his salary each month, said Kapoor.

<formid=367815></formid=367815>
